CPME Update

Fall 2020 Residency Visits-Invitation for Comments
As part of the residency approval process, the Council on
Podiatric Medical Education conducts on-site evaluation of
new programs and on-site re-evaluation of approved programs. Each spring and fall, CPME meets to determine approval decisions. At its fall meeting, the council reviews programs visited during the previous spring's on-site evaluation
cycle, and at its spring meeting, the council reviews programs
visited during the previous fall's on-site evaluation cycle. Due
to the COVID-19 crisis, all on-site evaluations for the fall
2020 evaluation cycle will occur virtually.
To review the programs scheduled for on-site evaluation
this fall, visit www.cpme.org and select "Residencies," then
"On-Site Evaluation of Approved Residency Programs." The
council updates the list as evaluation dates are confirmed.
The council's residency approval process includes consideration of third-party comments concerning an institution's
qualifications for either provisional or continued approval.
Comments must be received 15 days prior to the program's
scheduled site visit date. All third-party comments must be
signed. Comments are forwarded to the evaluation team, and
anonymously to the program director for response, if appropriate, prior to the visit.

Residency Document Revisions in Progress
On a regularly scheduled basis, the standards, requirements,
and procedures of the council are reviewed and revised. To facilitate these reviews, ad hoc educational policies, standards,
requirements, and procedures committees are appointed. The
council's schedule includes review of publications related to
residency education (CPME 320, Standards and Requirements
for Approval of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residencies, and
CPME 330, Procedures for Approval of Podiatric Medicine and
Surgery Residencies). The following individuals serve on the
council's residency ad hoc advisory committee:

The committee held its first meeting in October 2018. As
part of the review process, the committee considered the requirements for residencies in allopathic medicine, occupational therapy, dentistry, and osteopathic medicine. Input to
the process was provided through a survey of the residency
community of interest.
Additional meetings were held in March, June, and December 2019. The committee scheduled an additional meeting
for March 2020; unfortunately, this meeting was cancelled
due to the COVID-19 crisis. As of this writing, a virtual meeting to continue the committee's work is planned for September 2020. The committee will continue to meet either in person or virtually until draft copies of the documents are
available for consideration by the council. Once approved by
CPME, the proposed documents will be disseminated to the
community of interest for comment, and the council will
conduct one or more public forums.

Council to Hold Fall Meeting
The council will hold its fall meeting October 17. The
council's agenda includes review of annual reports and progress reports submitted by the colleges, and consideration of
continuing approval of approximately 50 residency programs
and five continuing education providers. Other CPME agenda items include review and possible adoption of the College
Accreditation Eligibility Requirements, numerous college and
residency policy matters, and review of how the colleges are
responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Recommendations emanating from council committees,
which are completing their deliberations at meetings held
August through October, constitute a significant portion of
the CPME agenda. The Continuing Education Committee
met August 29. The Residency Review Committee met September 25-26. The council's Accreditation, Executive, and
Budget Committees will hold meetings October 14-16, prior
to the CPME meeting.
