President's Message

The Only Thing We Know
about the Future
As of this writing, we are more than halfway through 2020 and deep into
Washington, DC's dog days of summer. It seems like just yesterday I was preparing my inaugural address for APMA's House of Delegates. In doing so, I
came across Peter Drucker's thoughtful quote, "The only thing we know about
the future is that it will be different." Who could have known then how truly
profound and prophetic these words would turn out to be?
This has been a year of change on so many levels. I am proud to report that
your association has been nimble in adapting to the onslaught of change. One
prime example was APMA's robust Online CECH Summer Series. Just a year
ago, a 25-hour virtual seminar would have seemed highly unlikely, if not impossible. Today the question is whether online learning is a novelty or the
wave of the future. True, there will always be tremendous value in meeting
face-to-face to catch up and compare clinical notes and family milestones. If
you are looking forward to getting out again next year, please save the date for
APMA's Annual Scientific Meeting (The National) in Denver, July 29-August
1, 2021. For now, virtual learning has filled a significant need for our members and struck a chord with many who enjoyed the convenience and flexibility of this format. Read more about APMA's evolving virtual education offerings on page 12.
There are other technology-based initiatives bearing fruit at APMA. Our
registry is now collecting de-identified clinical data and reporting MIPS information to CMS. The registry will soon be able to provide valuable data to
support clinical research studies and supplement our advocacy efforts.
And of course, our primary focus this year remains responding to COVID-19
by advocating for our membership and supplying critical information to help
navigate federal support programs. Most recently, APMA sent a comment letter requesting that CMS postpone recoupment of funds distributed through
the Medicare Accelerated and Advance Payment Program. We also continue a
myriad of non-COVID programs and action items of great import to our
membership. Our health policy team has been hard at work preparing educational programs on E/M coding changes for 2021 (read more in our Reimbursement column on page 28) and designing documentation templates to
help members challenge commercial and Medicare advantage payers who
failed to honor proper coding guidelines, including denials for routine foot
care using the -59 modifier (see page 16).
Our Communications Committee met in early September to begin planning
our November public education campaign around diabetes, with careful attention to the unique circumstances of diabetes care during a pandemic.
Watch for more information on that campaign in your APMA Weekly Focus.
APMA has been nimble on your behalf and will continue to evolve and
adapt to our changing health-care system and our changing world. Change
is constant. But so is your association's abiding commitment to the needs of
its members. n
