2021 State Advocacy Forum
to Focus on Partnerships
T
he 2021 State Advocacy Forum will be held August 20-
21 in Atlanta. The forum is a biennial conference that
provides an opportunity for state association leaders and
representatives to discuss ongoing state legislative issues.
The event is conducted in a host state to recognize that
state component's exceptional accomplishments in state advocacy
(e.g., advocacy successes, relationship building). More than
30 components participated in the 2019 forum in Milwaukee.
The Georgia Podiatric Medical Association (GPMA) was
chosen to host the 2021 State Advocacy Forum due to its recent
legislative successes. GPMA has been a model association
in forming partnerships to achieve progress. Through its
hard work and dedication, GPMA achieved a legislative victory
in June 2020 that updated the Georgia amputation law by
removing unnecessary regulatory requirements and allowing
podiatrists to form professional corporations with MDs and
DOs. GPMA also used funds from its 2019 CPA Innovation
Grant to secure this victory.
The theme for this year's event is " Partners in Progress. " The
program will focus on the partners state components need to
advance legislation and enact change. While APMA will always
be a strong partner for state components through the Center
for Professional Advocacy, it is important to also engage with
local MDs and DOs, patient advocacy groups, and other medical
societies and organizations. It is also important to mobilize
component members to be active partners.
The forum will also include a discussion on plenary licenses
and the future of podiatric scope-of-practice laws, provide tips
for giving effective testimony, and provide instruction as to how
states can incorporate eAdvocacy into their initiatives. Most importantly,
there will be ample time devoted to open discussions
and brainstorming. One of the true values of the forum is the
opportunity to learn from your colleagues and fi nd out what has
worked and not worked in their states' efforts.

program between APMA and the state components. APMA
pays the Friday night (August 20) room stay for up to two
representatives from each state component. State components
are responsible for travel costs. The deadline to register
is July 20. Make sure your state component is represented in
