Help Your Patients Access Affordable Insulin
APMA continues to make efforts to help members offer patients
affordable insulin options. We have compiled information
to enable you to provide patients not only outstanding
podiatric care, but also informational resources specific to
patients under financial distress and living with diabetes.
Together, we can help our patients achieve a higher quality of
life despite their medical and financial circumstances.
As a reminder, GetInsulin.org is a nonprofit organization
that connects individuals in the US living with diabetes to
insulin affordability options, with access to insulin matching
their unique circumstances (visit https://getinsulin.org).
Users of this service answer questions about their location,
insurance type, income, and prescription. GetInsulin.org creates
a customized action plan to guide that person to solutions
that best serve their individual circumstances. This program
is supported by a coalition of partners including the
American Diabetes Association, the Association of Diabetes
Care and Education Specialists, the Endocrine Society,
Feeding America, and others. It is funded by Lilly, Mylan,
Novo Nordisk, and Sanofi.
If your patient is prescribed Humulin R U-500, they can
visit www.humulin.com/savings-support to access a co-pay
card for a $25 monthly prescription.
Patients with commercial or no insurance may now be eligible
for savings through the new Lilly Insulin Value Program.
Advise your patients to visit www.insulinaffordability.com or
call the Lilly Diabetes Solution Center at 833-808-1234 for
details. Governmental beneficiaries are not eligible. Active
co-pay cards have been reset to a $35 co-pay. n

JAPMA Online Articles Cited in Nature Metabolism
Two JAPMA articles about the risk of complications from
diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic have been cited in
Nature Metabolism, under the umbrella of Nature, the world's
leading multidisciplinary science journal.
" Diabetes-Related Amputations: A Pandemic within a
Pandemic, " by Lee Rogers, DPM, and " Diabetes-Related
Major and Minor Amputation Risk Increased During the
COVID-19 Pandemic, " by Dominick Casciato, DPM, were
highlighted in " Consequences of the COVID-19 Pandemic
for Patients with Metabolic Diseases, " published in Nature on
February 25, regarding the acute care of patients with
diabetes-related foot disease. The article qualifies diabetic
foot syndrome as an acute medical emergency, noting the
COVID-19 pandemic's effect on mortality and amputation
rates associated with delayed and inadequate care of these
already high-risk patients.
