a Resounding Success in Denver and Online
fter months of planning and preparation, the APMA
Annual Scientific Meeting (The National) made a triumphant
return July 29-August 1 in Denver and online.
The hybrid meeting welcomed more than 1,000
participants on site at the Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention
Center and an additional 400 online. This phenomenal
meeting was a testament to the commitment of your association,
your peers, and the industry partners that support
the profession.
This year, APMA organized all of the outstanding meeting
content into two convenient tracks (rather than the traditional
three) based on past attendees' feedback. One track covered
medical topics, while the other focused on surgical topics.
Hands-on workshops and non-CECH events offered
additional opportunities to learn.
The Opening Session offered a keynote address from the
inspirational Natalie Stavas, MD, the program director for
Child Protection Pediatrics at the University of California,
San Diego. Dr. Stavas shared her story as a participant in the
2013 Boston Marathon and as a physician saving lives in the
wake of the bombings. (She also admitted she should have
visited a podiatrist after suffering a training injury prior to the
marathon!) Dr. Stavas' stirring speech was a positive and energizing
way to kick off an exceptional meeting.
Other highlights of The National included the Oral Abstracts
session and Poster Abstracts Symposium, during
which the cutting-edge science behind foot and ankle
medicine and surgery was on display. Check out the winners
of the Poster Abstract Competition on page 13. The
fourth annual Podiatry School Student Quiz Bowl was a
rousing success with contestants from the colleges engaged
in an exciting " Jeopardy! " -style competition. Timothy
Cheung, PhD, a fourth-year student from the Dr. William
M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at the Rosalind

Franklin University of Medicine and Science, took home
the trophy.
Attendees in Denver took in a screening of " Do No Harm, "
a documentary exposing the epidemic of physician suicide,
followed by a panel discussion with physician wellness experts.
Virtual attendees had access to an on-demand wellness

On Sunday, the Harry Goldsmith, DPM, Memorial Coding
Seminar afforded an unparalleled opportunity to learn from
the leading experts in foot and ankle coding. This year, the
seminar covered the 59 and X- Modifier Routine Foot Care
Problem, Separately Identifiable Evaluation and Management,
coding hot topics, and cybersecurity. The coding seminar
is dedicated to the memory of the late Harry Goldsmith,
DPM, APMA consultant and coding expert.
Podiatric medical assistants also enjoyed a dedicated educational
program, presented in conjunction with the American
Society of Podiatric Medical Assistants. The National always
provides a wonderful opportunity for physicians and
their assistants to learn alongside each other.
APMA gratefully acknowledges the outstanding support of

as our exhibitors. The buzzing exhibit hall was an outstanding
reminder of the value our corporate partners bring to The
National and to our specialty. Most of all, we thank all the
