CPME Update
Fall 2021 Residency Visits: Invitation for Comments
As part of the residency approval process, the Council on
Podiatric Medical Education conducts on-site evaluation of
new
programs
and
on-site
re-evaluation
of
approved
programs. Each fall and spring, CPME meets to determine
approval decisions. At its fall meeting, the council reviews
programs visited during the previous spring's on-site evaluation
cycle, and at its spring meeting, the council reviews programs
visited during the previous fall's on-site evaluation cycle. To
review the programs currently scheduled for on-site evaluation
during the fall of 2021, visit www.cpme.org/onsiteschedule.
The council updates the list as evaluation dates are confirmed.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the council has elected to
conduct all fall 2021 on-site evaluations virtually.
The council's residency approval process includes consideration
of third-party comments concerning an institution's qualifications
for either provisional or continued approval. Comments
must be received 15 days prior to the program's scheduled site
visit date. All third-party comments must be signed. Comments
are forwarded to the evaluation team and anonymously to the
program director for response, if appropriate, prior to the visit.
Please submit third-party comments for programs to be reviewed
this fall to Bertus Tempelhoff, CPME assistant director,
at btempelhoff@cpme.org.
Fellowship Document Revisions Starting
On a regularly scheduled basis, CPME reviews and, when appropriate,
revises the requirements and procedures associated
with various evaluation activities.
The council has initiated a review of its publications related
to fellowship evaluation and approval:
* CPME 820, Standards and Requirements for Approval of
Podiatric Fellowships
* CPME 830, Procedures for Approval of Podiatric Fellowships
As part of the document review process, CPME wishes to
obtain the opinions of the podiatric community regarding
crucial elements of fellowship programs. The council requests
your assistance in providing information that is important to
this project by completing a survey that will provide baseline
information for consideration by the ad hoc committee appointed
by the council. The survey can be completed at

Council to Hold Fall Meeting
The council will hold its fall meeting October 15-16. The
council's agenda includes review of annual reports and progress
reports submitted by the colleges and consideration of
continuing approval of approximately 28 residency programs

and six continuing education provider petitions and one application.
Other CPME agenda items will include the review
of comments received from the community of interest and
possible adoption of CPME 120, Standards and Requirements
for Accrediting Colleges of Podiatric Medicine; CPME 130,
Procedures for Accrediting Colleges of Podiatric Medicine;
CPME 935a, Guidelines for the Conduct of Appeals by Colleges
of Podiatric Medicine; and CPME 935b, Guidelines for
the Conduct of Appeals by Residencies, Fellowships, Providers
of Continuing Education, and Specialty Boards.
Recommendations emanating from council committees,
which will complete their deliberations at meetings held
September through October, will constitute a significant portion
of the CPME agenda. The Continuing Education Committee met
September 10-11. The Residency Review Committee and
Residency Ad Hoc Advisory Committee met September 24-25
and September 26-27, respectively. The council's Accreditation,
Executive, and Budget Committees will hold meetings October
13-14, just prior to the CPME meeting. n
