The National Makes the Grade with Students

Podiatric medical students often hear about " The National. " Every summer, college faculty
members and other DPMs, along with a select group of students, attend the conference,
and it's a dream for a lot of students to be able to attend this renowned medical event.
I

to present
my research
as part of the
oral abstract
compet i t ion
at The National in 2020, but due to the
pandemic, the conference was canceled.
This year, I was lucky enough to attend
the event in person, finally! It was one
of my favorite medical education events
ever. Not only did I get to present my
research, but I also learned so much-
the lectures at The National were not
just geared toward physicians but also to
students. What I loved was that I was able
to pick and choose between the surgery
and medicine tracks and really create a
schedule of the lectures that interested
me the most.
One of my favorite elements of the
conference was the Students' and
Residents' Program. This track was specifically
designed with students in mind,
so they could get the most out of their
experience at The National, and attend
lectures specifically geared to them. I
love research and learning what research
is being performed, so I really enjoyed
the oral abstracts and listening to others
share their cutting-edge scientific
findings. While I didn't have an oral
abstract this year, I was selected to
present my poster abstract orally to the
virtual attendees, which I loved doing!
I not only was able to participate in the
conference from an attendee's perspective
but also was lucky enough to
experience it from a staff perspective. I
went from seeing how every detail was
thoughtfully planned and coordinated
for the conference, to seeing it all
implemented and take place in
Denver. I am so thankful and lucky to
have been part of that experience and
watch everything come to life as safely
and successfully as possible. At The
National, I was also able to help capture
different types of social media content
for APMA's social media channels,
including filming with the Board of
Trustees. In doing so, I was able to capture
the board's enthusiasm for
attending The National and also to share
my experiences as the APMA student
intern and a current student in
podiatric medical school. I am so thankful
to have attended the National in
Denver this year and can't wait to attend
next year, July 28-31, in Orlando, FL!

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and physician burnout
and resilience have been paramount issues for APMA's Public Health and
Preventive Podiatric Medicine Committee (PHPPMC). The committee recently
restructured APMA's physician well-being resources. As part of this
restructuring, resources relating to mental health and physician wellness
are now accessible to our members on a redesigned webpage that is easier
than ever to navigate. Visit www.apma.org/wellbeing to view these
resources and learn more.

well-being index. Developed by the
Mayo Clinic, this nine-question survey
can help you gain insight by quantifying
something that can sometimes be
difficult to articulate: your well-being.
Your results will show you a well-being
index score, along with how your current
state compares to others in your field.

Additionally, you can check your wellbeing
index over a period of time to see
if there are changes in your score.
To access this survey, select " Check
My Well-Being Index " on the " WellBeing "
tab. From there, you will be asked
to enter an invitation code, which can be
found just above the button. Once you
create an account, you will be directed to
take the survey.
Do you already have a handle on where

tabs on the page contain curated lists
offering resources on a variety of matters,
including COVID-19, substance
recovery support, exercise ideas, suicide
prevention, and more. If you, or someone
you know, are struggling, there may
be a resource for you.
