On Sunday, March 13, Laura J. Pickard,
DPM, will be sworn in as president of the
American Podiatric Medical Association.
Dr. Pickard is a veteran of the APMA Health Policy and
Practice Committee, well versed in the challenges of solo
practice as a private practitioner in Chicago, and an avid
believer in the power of preventive and primary podiatric care.
Dr. Pickard is a proponent of listening as leadership and
has an acute appreciation for the diversity of backgrounds,
settings, and perspectives within the profession-and how
that diversity brings value to APMA's membership.
APMA News spoke recently with Dr. Pickard about her
priorities as she approaches her presidency. Read on and get
to know our incoming president.
APMA News: What inspired you to become
a podiatrist?
Dr. Pickard: For me personally it was more about
the " who " than the " what. " I was a biology major at
the University of Missouri-Columbia, and my
pre-med advisor, Dr. Breitenbach, told me about this
" up-and-coming " field of podiatry. I was given a list
of podiatrists near me and then contacted Thomas
Brant, DPM, who practiced just outside of my
hometown. I shadowed him at his office and
hospital on several occasions. What struck me
about his practice was how rewarding it was for him
and how happy his patients were to see him. His
patients came into the office in pain and left without
it. I also enjoyed that he treated patients both young
and old and a wide variety of conditions.
APMA News: Tell us about your education
and training.
Dr. Pickard: After receiving my BA in Biology and
BS in Secondary Education from the University of
Missouri, I graduated from the Dr. William Scholl
College of Podiatric Medicine and then went on to
my residency at Cook County Hospital. I have been
in private practice for more than 30 years.
I am a diplomate of the American Board of
Podiatric Medicine and the American Board of
Foot and Ankle Surgeons. I am also a fellow of
the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine of the Royal
College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
