Lawrence A. Santi, DPM
Candidate for Treasurer
As a candidate for APMA treasurer,
my vision is for the Board of
Trustees and membership to work
as a team to elevate podiatry to
its rightful position in the medical
community. We have all invested time and effort in
this profession, and our daily practices should be
fruitful and enjoyable. If we all work together, we can
overcome many of the obstacles that stand before us
and accomplish this feat. I have always believed and
will continue to believe that " Together We Can. "
Realizing education would be an important key to
our growth, I became a diplomate of the American
Board of Podiatric Surgery (now the American Board
of Foot and Ankle Surgery) in 1986 and a founding
member of the American Society of Podiatric
Surgeons. I also became the residency director at
New York Community Hospital in 1994, a position
that I continue to hold today. This position gives me
an even greater ability to extend my knowledge and
teach the younger podiatric generation.
As an APMA trustee, I have been actively working
with the Coding Committee and the Health
Policy and Practice Committee. I was the chair of
the Annual Meeting Committee and have been
board liaison to the following: Communications
Committee, Development Committee, Private
Insurance Subcommittee, Medicare and Public
Payer Subcommittee, DME Workgroup, Podiatric
Seals Committee, Public Health and Preventive
Podiatric Medicine Committee, Committee to End
Health Care Disparities, Membership Committee,
the National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners,
and the American Association of Colleges of
Podiatric Medicine. I am presently the chair of the
Anthem Workgroup, whose purpose is to review
Anthem's " Appropriate Use Criteria: Small Joint
Surgery Guidelines " and the effect it would have
on our members. I am working with the Finance
Committee to prepare myself for the treasurer position.
I have found my past nine years on the board
to be fruitful and hopefully successful in making a
difference together with my fellow board members.
Looking toward the future, there are still many
goals I feel must be accomplished for our members.
Some of these include:
1. Fair and equitable compensation
2. Access to all health-care delivery systems
3. The patient's right to access to foot and ankle
care provided by a podiatrist
4. The passage of the Helping Ensure Life- and
Limb-Saving Access to Podiatric Physicians
(HELLPP) Act
5. Provider non-discrimination
6. Antitrust reform for physicians
7. Medical malpractice reform
8. RAC reform
9. A growing and consistently high-quality pool
of candidates to our podiatry schools
I am looking forward to running as treasurer
this year and to continuing all my efforts to help
improve every aspect of the podiatric medical
profession for my colleagues.
