and interaction with state legislators.
The Georgia Podiatric Medical Association (GPMA)
was chosen to host the biennial State Advocacy
Forum in recognition of its recent legislative successes.
" We used the information we learned at the
2019 State Advocacy Forum to create the roadmap
that led to our wins, " said Marit Sivertson, GPMA executive
director, during a panel discussion in which
the GPMA talked about its processes.
State components and APMA have already made
plans for 2022. Eight state component societies
were awarded Innovation Grants for 2022. These
grants are designed to help state components with
their scope-of-practice and physician definition
advocacy efforts and their efforts to educate and
build relationships with MD/DOs, policymakers, and
payers. The grants help incentivize state component
leaders to develop innovative advocacy initiatives to
advance the profession. They may be used to assist
state components to update their scope-of-practice
law to better align with APMA's Scope-of-Practice
template; change state law to define DPMs as physicians;
or educate payers, policymakers, and MD/
DOs about the podiatric medical profession.
The following state components were awarded a
$1,000 grant to pursue their initiatives:
* Alabama Podiatric Medical Association
* Florida Podiatric Medical Association
* Iowa Podiatric Medical Association
* Mississippi Podiatric Medical Association
* New Mexico Podiatric Medical Association
* Ohio Foot and Ankle Medical Association
* Puerto Rico Podiatric Medical Association
* South Carolina Podiatric Medical Association

APMA also awarded CPA Assistance Grants to
ALPMA and MSPMA. These cost-sharing grants
are intended to help state component societies
with their state legislative, legal, or regulatory
initiatives. ALPMA applied for a grant to assist
with grassroots efforts and its scope-of-practice
advocacy initiatives. MSPMA applied for a grant
to assist with building relationships with
state legislators.
