network through " drive-by downloads " that do
not require clicking on a link or opening an email
attachment. Drive-by downloading occurs when
a user unknowingly visits an infected website and
malware is downloaded and installed without the
user's knowledge.
Ransomware can also infect your systems
through Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP),
Microsoft's desktop software, allowing a remote
user to access another computer on the network.
How Do I Prevent Ransomware?
Install software patches in a timely manner.
Ransomware often uses a known vulnerability
in older software versions to infect your system.
For example, WannaCry leveraged a flaw in the
Microsoft Windows Server Messaging Block
Protocol that had been patched a month earlier
(Security Bulletin MS17-010). Those who were
affected by WannaCry and subsequent attacks
using the ETERNALBLUE attack tool could have
avoided the problem if they had followed good
patch management practice and updated their
software promptly.
Perform regular, comprehensive backups.
Protective measures may fail. However, ransomware
ceases to be effective if you have no need
to pay the ransom. Implementing a strong backup
policy for critical data, including regular testing and
restoration drills, can let your organization shrug
off all but the most concerted ransomware attack.
Use the 3-2-1 rule for backups:
* 3 copies
* 2 of which are on different media types
* 1 copy isolated offsite
Install antivirus software and update it regularly.
In most serious ransomware attacks, a global
network of security professionals works together
to find ways to reverse-engineer new strains as
they appear and report their findings to major
antivirus companies. This effort increases their
reputation in the community and sometimes
comes with a " bug bounty " bonus. Because of
the widespread effort by these security professionals,
the window between a " zero-day attack "
(malware variant not previously known or seen)
and an antivirus signature designed to detect it
is usually less than 24 hours. By using a top-line
antivirus system and updating it regularly, the
chances of infection are low.
Practice good email/internet hygiene.
Learn how to spot phishing emails. Avoid
opening attachments or Office documents
from unknown sources. Be selective about your
browsing habits. These actions can reduce the
likelihood of infection significantly.
Educate your workforce.
Training your employees on cybersecurity best
practices is essential. Indeed, some argue training
