ASPS Welcomes ABPM-Certified
and Qualified Podiatrists
By a vote of 70 percent, members of the American
Society of Podiatric Surgeons (ASPS) voted to update
the ASPS bylaws to include podiatrists who have
surgical privileges at a licensed, accredited healthcare
facility and are certified by the American Board
of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM), along with those
certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle
Surgery (ABFAS), as fellows of ASPS. The update also
allows those who are qualified by ABPM, along with
those qualified by ABFAS, to join as associates.
Active surgical privileges are still required for
fellows and associates. Certification or qualification
alone does not guarantee fellow or associate
status. Podiatrists without surgical privileges,
certification, or qualification who have an interest
in podiatric surgical education may apply for membership
in the affiliate category.
ASPS is not a certifying or surgical board. ASPS
is a membership-based society with a mission to
" provide accessible quality surgical education for
podiatric surgeons and all members of APMA with

Proof of surgical privileges must be included with
new member applications and all new members
must be approved by the Board of Directors.

APMWA Announces 36th Annual
Student Writing Competition
The American Podiatric Medical Writers
Association (APMWA) has announced its 36th
Annual Student Writing Competition. All papers
must be non-technical in nature. Appropriate subjects
include practice management, ethics, law,
education, or any topic that would be suitable for
a lay publication. There is no word limit. Papers
will be evaluated for content, style, grammar,
neatness, and overall impact.
First prize: $1,000; second prize: $750; third
prize: $500. The competition is sponsored by
an APMA Educational Foundation endowment
from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin. Honorable
Mention certificates may also be awarded. This
competition is open to any enrolled podiatric
student. Entries must be received by April 1
at bblock@podiatrym.com. Entries become
the property of APMWA, which may arrange
publication of the entry.
