cover feature WOMEN AT APMA THE HISTORY OF March is Women's History Month, and we're celebrating by taking a look at the dramatic changes in the representation of women at APMA, from its founding more than a century ago, to the present day. The editor of the Chiropody Record wrote, The National Association of Chiropodists (NAC) was formed with many women among the ranks. Women came to chiropody by way of beauty care and often worked closely with their husbands providing foot care. Mrs. E.A. Griswold was among the original directors of the NAC. The NAC Women's Committee was formed. Ironically, the committee may have contributed to marginalizing women within the leadership of the early association by channeling participation by women mostly into the committee and not the larger organization. " Chiropody as a profession for women is ideal. It is the only one of the learned professions which has accepted women as practitioners from the very beginning and which has never drawn a sex line. The militant sisters do not have to demand their rights of Chiropody- they have always been accepted on a par with the men practitioners of the profession. " A woman served as chair of the Committee on Special Membership. After her tenure, the NAC saw a long absence of women in leadership. 1912 16 1915 apmanews MARCH/APRIL 2022 1919 1937
