what I enjoy most about Your APMA-

and the audience, and always, ALWAYS

resources to educate the medical staff about
the education, training, and experience of
podiatric physicians and surgeons. While
APMA does not provide legal advice, we
recommended that Dr. Hudson and her
colleagues review the hospital bylaws and
regulations, so they understand the process
and their rights and responsibilities.
Additionally, APMA provided Dr. Hudson
a letter with APMA's position statement
supporting granting doctors of podiatric
medicine privileges that are commensurate
with an individual podiatrist's education,
training, and experience.
What's the status of your privileging
issue today? Has it been resolved, is
it ongoing, and have you seen any
progress in getting it resolved?
Dr. Madden: After a productive discussion
with the vice president of Medical
Affairs, we successfully got the bylaws
changed, so now Podiatry is its own section,
and not under the Orthopedics
section. We're still working on updating
the language for the actual privileges,
although that's more of a hospital system
red tape issue now. But we wouldn't have
been able to start that process without
APMA's help to change the bylaws.
Dr. Hudson: The situation is improved,
however, we are still having some issues
with being sent all of the trauma. We
currently have an end-of-the-month rundown
that covers what specialty received
what consults, and the ER is working on
resolving this.
APMA was the source
we referenced when we
ran into the issue with
parity. They connected us
with [CPA staff], who
could further explain our
rights and how best to
approach the situation.
What advice would you give
your colleagues who may be
experiencing privileging issues?
Dr. Madden: My advice to colleagues
would be to carefully read what
privileges you're applying for and to
make sure there aren't any procedures
missing. Keep in mind that surgical
privileges are often the first step for
other things, such as ER or inpatient
call. Every hospital is different and
some still need to be brought into the
modern times of well-trained surgical
podiatrists. APMA and your state organization
can help!
Dr. Hudson: Don't stop advocating for
our profession. We are trained to take
these trauma [calls], and in order to
obtain and maintain equal footing with
orthopedists, we need to be heard and
not take no for an answer.

center. Have you noticed the increase
in first-person content contributed by
your peers in this issue and other recent
ones? That's all Tiffany.
I am grateful for my role in Your
APMA's first decade of publication and
cannot wait to see how it grows and
evolves over the next 10 years. But whatever
it is, I'm willing to bet it will include
advice on coding, finding jobs, and
establishing yourself in practice.
