Dr. Owens Appointed Chief
of Staff of Central Alabama
Veterans Health Care System
APMA is pleased to announce that APMA member
Kittra Owens, DPM (former chief of Podiatry at the
Las Vegas VA Medical Center) has been selected
as the new chief of staff of the Central Alabama
Veterans Health Care System in Montgomery, AL,
eff ective June 19. Dr. Owens' appointment marks
the fi rst time a podiatrist has been made chief of
staff at a VA facility.
Dr. Owens is a graduate of Temple University
School of Podiatric Medicine and a proud Navy
veteran who served in Afghanistan, Cuba, and
Japan. While in Afghanistan, Dr. Owens' mission
was to instruct seven Afghan National Army orthopedic
surgeons in lower extremity care to prepare
them for a planned withdrawal of NATO. In 2015,
Dr. Owens completed her active-duty service and
transitioned to the Department of Veterans Aff airs.
Dr. Owens is an assistant professor at the University
of Nevada Las Vegas School of Medicine. Her role
as VA graduate medical education site director for
podiatry/foot and ankle surgery allows for her continued
involvement in training physicians in internal
medicine, family medicine, and podiatric surgery.
APMA's successful legislative advocacy in 2018
led to passage of the MISSION Act, which reclassifi
es podiatrists as podiatric surgeons within the VA
Health Administration (VHA), placing them in the
same pay band as their allopathic and osteopathic
peers. Jeff rey Robbins, DPM, executive director
of the podiatry program, Veterans Aff airs Central
Offi ce, congratulated Dr. Owens on her achievement
and noted that, " if not for the work of APMA,
this would not have been possible. "
