Insight from the Final Year
of Podiatric Medical School
and Residency

Summer has arrived, and with it comes the end of podiatric medical school
and residency training for many students and residents across the country.
We sat down with third-year resident Brad Jimerson, DPM, and fourth-year
podiatric medical student Timothy Cheung, PhD, CPT, to discuss their plans
as they prepare to transition into the next stage of their respective careers.
Dr. Jimerson is completing his residency program at Christus St. Patrick
Hospital in Lake Charles, LA. He attended Des Moines University College of
Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. Dr. Cheung is graduating from Dr. William
M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University of
Medicine and Science in North Chicago, IL.
Three or four years ago today,
what were you doing?
Dr. Jimerson: Three years ago, I had
just completed my fourth-year clerkship
rotations and was preparing to graduate
and move to Louisiana in early July.
Dr. Cheung: Believe it or not, I was
still in podiatry school, or more specifically,
completing my first year as a PhD
student in the DPM-PhD program. I am
graduating in my seventh year (four
years podiatry and three years PhD) in
the DPM-PhD dual degree program at
Scholl College. Before that, I was in a
MS in Human Physiology program at
Boston University.

What made you want to pursue
podiatry as a career?
Dr. Jimerson: I was initially drawn to
podiatry because of the diverse practice
opportunities it offers. One thing that
must be considered when choosing a
career is the ability to live the life you
envision after graduation. Having a
DPM degree affords you the ability to
work
in private practices,
hospitals,
wound care centers, academic centers,
and more. This diversity allows graduates
to build the practice they feel is best
suited to support them and their families.
Dr. Cheung: As a personal trainer, I
was in graduate school at Boston
