University where we were studying the
mechanics of lower back pain, specifically
through the changes in lower
extremity arthrokinetics and arthrokinematics
associated with a certain foot
structure. This experience led me to
study literature from JAPMA, JFAS, and
The Foot. Indeed, my first exposure to
podiatric
medicine and surgery was
through research. Since then, my mentors
have helped me create environments
and opportunities to develop my passion
and cultivate my skills towards becoming
a podiatric surgeon-scientist.
What are your next steps as you
prepare to leave residency/graduate
from podiatric medical school?
Where are you headed?
Dr. Jimerson: I will be staying in Lake
Charles, LA, and joining the Center for
Orthopaedics. There I will work with
residents at the Christus St. Patrick residency
program and serve patients and
athletes across Southwest Louisiana.
Dr. Cheung: I am excited to start my
residency training at Yale-New Haven
Hospital. Until then, I am preparing
for the move and studying for APMLE
Part 3.
What advice would you give
yourself as a first-year resident/
first-year student?
Dr. Jimerson: There are three things
I would tell myself as a first-year resident.
First, prepare for every surgery as if
your attending will not be there. It's
easy to get comfortable with the safety
net of having an attending present during
your surgeries. Prepare that way
now because one day soon, they won't
be there. Second, read often and read
other professional journals. There is so
much knowledge that can be gained by
reading journals from other specialties.
Finally, embrace the challenges of residency.
Being a resident is a unique but
fulfilling experience. At times it can be
difficult, but it goes by fast.

through lectures tailored to each training
year. The site has proven itself to be
an invaluable asset to thousands of residents,
and as it enters its second decade
it continues to evolve to meet the needs
of its users.
The REdRC is now transitioning from
a standalone website to become part

lectures and dozens of residency-specific
resources while also seeing a variety of
other clinical and professional education

Dr. Cheung: Reflecting, there are so
many things that come to mind, but I'll
point out the ones that stick out to me.
First, I recommend taking ownership of
your education and being intentional
with your professional career. Actively
engage with our profession; it can help
you develop a framework for learning: a
perspective with the ultimate goal of
treating patients and advancing our profession,
not just rote memorization.
Additionally, I recommend attending
extracurricular seminars, conferences,
and surgical labs. Although you might
not understand the language or specific
techniques yet, take the time to pay
close attention to the people who do
and ask for help when you need it.
Then, when you receive a formal
education on the topic, you will be able
to build on your experiences. Finally, I
recommend a willingness to receive
advice from mentors. There is honor in
receiving wisdom with gratitude, grace,
and humility.
