1960: Arthur E. Helfand, DPM, spearheaded development
of public health-related podiatry programs
in Philadelphia, such as " Keep Them Walking. "
1962: APMA established the Council on Public
Health to encompass its existing public health
committees.
- APMA established a Committee on Footwear
and a liaison committee to the US Public Health
Service (USPHS).
1963-1965: Programs mirroring Dr. Helfand's
program in Philadelphia were established in
Washington, DC, and Kansas City.
- APMA supported exhibits at APHA annual
meetings that were related to podiatry's role in
public health.
1965: The APMA Board of Trustees and CPME
approved and published " Podiatry in Public Health "
as policy.
1966: APMA Lobbyist John Carson met with
Edward Tarara, DPM, along with Drs. Shapiro and
Helfand, during the 1966 Traineeship Program
in Long Term Care at the University of Nebraska.
Carson developed the program for the University
of Nebraska; the Nebraska Podiatric Medical
Association was the first sponsor of such a program
funded by the USPHS in relation to foot health.

1969: Carson joined APMA staff to oversee public
health and other efforts.
- APMA President Charles R. Turchin, DPM,
identified public health as one of his primary
program objectives.
1971: Future APMA Presidents Ernest M. Weiner,
DPM, and E. Dalton McGlamry, DPM, submitted a
formal proposal to the APMA Board of Trustees to
establish a podiatric health section within APHA.
1972: APMA's Council on Public Health accepted
a resolution to establish an APHA Podiatric Health
Section; APHA Executive Board approved a recommendation
to establish the Podiatric Health
Section; APHA Governing Council established the
Podiatric Health Section; Dr. Helfand was elected
and installed as section chair; section granted three
seats in APHA's Governing Council for 1973 APHA
Annual Meeting.
2020: APHA's Podiatric Health Section renamed
" Foot and Ankle Health (FAH) Section. "
Over the years, all of the section leaders have
been podiatrists. The section works within the
APHA infrastructure to connect with other sections
that share mutual interests to advance podiatric
public health. Topics the section addresses
include falls prevention, amputation prevention/
limb preservation, opioids, well-being, healthy
aging, and more.
