Taking a Peek at
the Future of APMA

I
n 2022, the APMA Board of Trustees
was tasked with creating a new mission,
vision, and strategic plan for the
association. This process happens every
three to five years, with the goal of developing
a new blueprint to be the basis for
all decisions and activities of the organization.
Last year, the Board of Trustees
and integral APMA staff began the
process during a weekend in June with a
facilitator to help focus our thoughts and
ideas. At the beginning of the meeting,
we were asked to quietly reflect on our
goals for a successful organization. After
going around the room and having each
person share their thoughts on what a
successful and thriving APMA would
look like in three years, it was clear that
we were very much on the same page.

Innovative Research
We wanted a resilient membership,
further development and involvement
of young physicians, and recognition by
other medical community organizations.
Before the weekend was over, we had
established a framework for our new
mission and vision, laying the foundation
for the rest of the plan. We also created
four pillars to base goals upon:
It was also evident that diversity, equity,
and inclusion would be a theme we
would strive to include and emphasize in
each of these areas. From here, working
groups were created for each of the pillars
to come up with the goals and tactics
that would be used to move these topics
forward. By December, the staff and the
Board of Trustees had come together
multiple times, both in person and virtually,
to officially approve the new mission,
vision, and strategic plan. Each year,
until they are revised again, the operational
plan and budget will be based on
the work done in 2022. It was a lot of
work, but I feel it is something we can all

Several years ago, the Young Physician
Empowered Community
Leadership Panel worked to update our
own mission and vision, but this was the
first time I had been involved in this
entire process, including a strategic plan.
All the small, intricate details that needed
to be worked out amazed me, but
working together, it was a fluid process.
It is clear that our staff and the board are
dedicated to a successful, thriving future
for this organization. I am optimistic for
the future, especially knowing we have
so many great young physicians like you
driving our organization forward.
