Podiatry's Future Leaders
Up to the Challenge
I recently had the opportunity to attend the House of Delegates of the American
Podiatric Medical Students' Association (APMSA). It was an outstanding meeting, and I
was able not only to address their HOD, but also to interact with these students. I was
impressed with them: They are intelligent, engaged, and on the path to becoming
the future leaders of our profession. With that type of student in our podiatric medical
schools, the leadership potential for the profession is bright.
When addressing the students, I told them I believe their future as podiatric physicians
and surgeons is full of opportunities. Their education and training makes them the most
prepared professionals to treat the lower extremity. Also consider that demographically,
the majority of our profession is over the age of 50, so for those entering the profession,
there is and will continue to be a great demand for their services. The diabetes and
obesity epidemics, along with senior citizens who have enjoyed an active lifestyle and
want to continue to be active, ensure there will be a huge demand for the skills unique
to podiatric physicians and surgeons.
While I do see a great future for our profession, there is an incredible challenge that
has not yet been solved. That challenge consists of meeting our role in the reform of
our health-care system to provide both access to care for patients and fair and equitable
reimbursement for health-care provider services. These challenges are an issue now
and will become even more of an issue into the future. Development of the solutions to
these problems must include those of us who provide the services. Health-care reform
will be a diffi cult challenge, but between our current leaders and the bright, future leaders
I had the privilege of meeting at the APMSA HOD, I am confi dent that it is within our
reach.
