Reflect on
2023 House
of Delegates
The APMA House of Delegates convened in Washington,
DC, on March 18 to discuss matters concerning the
association and the podiatric profession. Check out
what this year's young physician attendees had to say
about their experience below!
This year's House of Delegates
was a first for the young
practitioners. APMA's Emerging
Leaders Program came together
as a group to develop a
proposition furthering young members'
involvement in the House of Delegates, and as a
group, caucused to all the states in attendance
and ultimately witnessed the proposition
presented to the House. This proposition-
supporting attendance and participation of future
young practitioners and leaders annually-passed.

This year, I was fortunate to be
able to attend the APMA House of
Delegates as an alternate for the
state of Louisiana. This was the
fifth House of Delegates that I've
attended as either a student or young physician,
and each meeting presents new challenges and
new opportunities for the field of podiatry. One
topic of discussion was the need to increase young
physician participation in our House of Delegates
meetings each year. The young physicians in
attendance gave a presentation to the House of
Delegates outlining the importance of young
physician participation in state and national
associations. In addition, a resolution drafted
by young physicians passed the House and will
allow APMA to directly sponsor up to five young
physicians to attend the House of Delegates
in 2024.1
This change will allow residents and
young practitioners to learn about the House of
Delegates and how they can get involved in
their state and national associations. As a small
profession, it is crucial to have people at the
forefront willing to advocate for podiatry. Each
year, I am inspired and encouraged by the APMA
members who have paved the way, and I hope
to see more fresh faces at our future meetings as
we continue to address the challenges facing
podiatrists.

I really had a great experience at
the House of Delegates this year.
There was definitely increased
representation by young
physicians, and I could feel the
energy from it. I feel we had a lot of great
conversations with some of the more established
physicians about the importance of involving
young physicians at the state and national level. I
am looking forward to having even more young
physicians at the house next year.
