it. In fact, recent work suggests that racial bias in
pain treatment may stem, in part, from racial bias
in perceptions of others' pain. This research has
shown that people assume a priori that Blacks feel
less pain than do whites. In a study by Staton et
al. for instance, patients were asked to report how
much pain they were experiencing, and physicians
were asked to rate how much pain they thought the
patients were experiencing. Physicians were more
likely to underestimate the pain of Black patients
(47 percent) relative to non-Black patients (33.5
percent). Of note, this research has also shown that
racial attitudes, measured both implicitly and explicitly,
do not predict racial bias in pain perception
or treatment.3
There are a few key reasons why inherent bias in
AI can occur:
1. Biased Training Data: AI models are typically
trained on large datasets, and if these datasets
are biased or reflect societal biases, the AI
system can learn and replicate those biases. For
example, if a facial recognition system is trained
on a dataset that primarily includes images of
lighter-skinned individuals, it may have difficulty
accurately recognizing faces of people with
darker skin tones.
2. Skewed Data Collection: Data collection methods
can introduce bias if they are not representative
of the entire population. For example, if an AI
system is trained to make loan approval decisions
based on historical loan data, but the data
predominantly represents a certain demographic
group, the AI system may learn to discriminate
unintentionally against other groups.
3. Pre-existing Biases in Human Decisions: AI
systems often learn from historical human
decisions or judgments, which may have
underlying biases. If these biased decisions are
used as training data, the AI system can learn
and perpetuate those biases. For instance, if a
hiring AI system is trained on data that reflects
historical gender biases in hiring decisions, it
may continue to perpetuate those biases when
making recommendations.
