Exploring Diversity
to Achieve Our
Common Goals
APMA is committed to being a standard bearer for diversity,
equity, and inclusion for our membership and our profession at
large. In this special issue of APMA News, we explore the topic
of DEI, the work of our DEI Committee, and the benefits APMA
believes this work will bring to the profession.
This is also our first all-digital issue of APMA News (beginning
with this issue, we will publish two all-digital issues per year,
with four traditional print issues). The all-digital format of this
issue is a perfect complement to the topic at hand-it allows us
to share the personal conversations and experiences that are at
the heart of DEI via podcast and video, as well as to link to more
resources and information. Check out page 24 for access to
digital-exclusive material.
The content of this issue sheds light on the many ways in
which a focus on DEI can improve our practices and our patient
care, from shedding light on cultural and social determinants of
health to making us better listeners and better employers. It can
also be a tool to help us collaborate and encourage growth in
our profession. DEI invites new voices to important conversations,
and along with them, new ideas.
I ask that every member approach this special issue with
curiosity. DEI is, fundamentally, all about the human desire to be
heard, included, and valued. So, I hope that you will take the time
to read (and to listen and watch) with an open mind.
In the pages that follow, you'll read an interview with our DEI
consultant Sharonda Simmons, who debunks the myths around
the topic of DEI, and a Q&A with our DEI Committee chair and
board liaisons, who talk more about the work they hope the
committee will accomplish. You'll learn more about what we've
already achieved (did you know, for example, that this year's
Annual Scientific Meeting included the largest percentage of
female speakers ever, and that 20 percent of our faculty came
from traditionally under-represented groups?). You'll also discover
how far we still have to go; I urge you to watch the compelling
footage of APMA members sharing their life and professional
experiences with the House of Delegates in our digital-exclusive
video content.
I hope you come away from this issue of APMA News with
an appreciation for the wonderfully diverse community that is
podiatric medicine and surgery and hope for a future of equity
and inclusivity.
