Representing Podiatry at APHA's
2023 Annual Meeting and Expo

The American Public Health Association's
(APHA) Annual Meeting and Expo took place in
Atlanta from November 12-15, 2023, with more
than 12,000 people in attendance. The Foot &
Ankle Health Section (FAH), composed largely of
podiatrists, residents, and students who advocate
for foot and ankle health-related issues, celebrated
another successful conference event.
The section, with support from APMA's Podiatric
Population Health Committee, held its Second
Annual Foot Screening in the APHA Wellness
Center, attracting more than 75 participants. Many
participants came for second or third opinions for
complicated musculoskeletal and sports-related
injuries, enabling the section to offer referrals to
APMA members in participants' respective areas.
The FAH section held two scientific sessions and
one poster session featuring speakers from Guam
and Moldova. Podiatric medical students and
residents were afforded the opportunity to present
their research endeavors on a national stage.
This year, APHA voted, passed, and accepted a
multidisciplinary falls prevention policy statement
(spearheaded by the FAH section) which endorses
the importance of podiatry in falls prevention efforts.
This statement, now with full approval by APHA, can
be used in legislative efforts urging podiatric care for
adults 65 and older who are at risk for falling. Visit

This year, the section provided student and resident
scholarships covering conference registration
and presented section awards to members who
have impacted podiatric public health advocacy
and education, including the Leonard A. Levy,
DPM, MPH Foot and Ankle Health Section Award
of $3,500. The following section members were
