Working Together
for a Better Future
This is my final message to the membership as APMA president.
In the March-April issue, you will read the transcript of the inaugural
speech delivered by President Lawrence Santi, DPM. I wish
my colleague Dr. Santi all the best and know that I am leaving
the presidency in excellent hands. As I approach the end of my
presidency, I'm reflecting with gratitude on the many accomplishments
we celebrated over the past 12 months (more on those
during my speech at the House of Delegates meeting). I am also
looking to the future we envision for our profession.
We have so many exciting and important mutual goals. Whether
you are passionate about bringing new students to our schools,
developing a uniform scope of practice, unifying our certifying
boards, or driving new research to promote and advocate for our
profession, you have an ally in APMA to help further that goal.
My presidency has given me a firsthand look at the aspirations
and enthusiasm within our great profession. It has also given me
a profound understanding of the obstacles we face as we work
to bring those aspirations to fruition. I challenge each of you
to make a true effort to collaborate in the year ahead. We are a
small profession. When we work together, we accomplish great
things. When we work against each other, we fail. So, in the year
ahead, under Dr. Santi's outstanding leadership, I urge you:
* Take the opportunity to listen and truly consider a colleague's
differing perspective.
* Support your professional organizations with your membership
dues, but also with your time and your talent. No organization is
perfect, but you won't change anything if you don't get involved.
* Remember that a rising tide lifts all boats. When we work
together for the good of the profession, rather than for our
individual benefit, everyone wins.
* Choose to be positive, especially about your chosen profession.
* And above all, Advocate Podiatric Medicine Always (APMA).
I thank you for the trust you have placed in me. It has been an
honor and a privilege to serve as president of our APMA. I look
forward to continuing to work closely with you as we advance
podiatric medicine and surgery together.
