I was trying to become involved in the
profession and didn't quite know where
to start (the infographic at www.apma.
org/getinvolved is a great starting point).
I attended APMA's Young Physicians'
Institute (held at that time in Nashville,
TN), and met members of APMA's
Board of Trustees, APMA's CEO, APMA
staff, members of the Young Physician
Leadership Panel (YPLP), and other YPs.
It was from that event where I developed
relationships with APMA members and
staff, which allowed me to have the great
experiences that I've had with APMA.
Even if you're only able to volunteer
a small amount of time, every little bit
helps advance the profession.

ith all of your recent accomplishments, we are
proud to say that it has never been easier to procure content for
Your APMA. In 2024, we will continue to provide interesting stories
and opportunities to our student and young physician members. With these
efforts in mind, the Your APMA team is excited to launch a new column. " APMA
Insights " is your opportunity as students and young physicians to share your
opinions, goals, and values through short survey questions throughout the
year. Your responses may help guide future Your APMA content.
In this first issue of 2024, we want to hear from you about APMA's Strategic
Plan. In 2022, the APMA Board of Trustees and staff conducted a strategic
planning effort, grounded in research conducted among members about
their priorities for their association. The strategic plan serves as the lens
through which APMA considers all projects and initiatives.

with $100K base salary plus many incentives,
and the other was just $130K salary
guaranteed, but it had a terrible location
that my wife would have hated.
Anyway, three years later, now I make
$230K at my dream job serving our
nation's veterans, doing research, and
lecturing across the country (13 states
during the last three years). The money
will come if you work hard and have
desirable skills. I look back at my past self
and feel like the idiot for almost chasing
$30K. It's not worth making your family
miserable.

family. You can always pursue another
job down the road for a better salary. And
remember ... it's just a job. Your job (and
salary) do not determine your worth as
a person.
Dr. Mizuo: I think an understated reality
of employment in podiatry is not
fully understanding the pros and cons
of being in a private versus multispecialty
versus orthopedic practice versus
hospital setting. I think understanding
how to appropriately negotiate a contract
should be strongly considered when
applying for any job but especially for
non-hospital settings.
