How would you describe the importance
of this medical mission?
The mission brings medical care that is either
not available in Nigeria or far too expensive for
most people to afford. Much-needed durable
medical equipment like braces for dropfoot
and cam walkers for injuries is non-existent.
Injectables are impossible to get. Even things
like syringes and needles can't be found. I hope
to bring these much-needed items with me next
year. I hope to obtain them either via donations
or a fundraising appeal.
How does the medical mission
collaborate with local health-care
organizations, professionals, or
government agencies in Nigeria to
create a cooperative effort to improve
podiatric health?
One of my most cherished memories was lecturing
about diabetic foot wounds at the College of
Health Sciences. I was invited to speak, and my
lecture was broadcast via Zoom to all of the health
science universities in Nigeria. Our hope is that we
will strengthen our relationship with the college and
start training new doctors in wound and trauma
care of the lower extremity. I also was privileged
to meet with physicians, both locally in Offa and in
Ilorin, and discussed diabetic foot and wound care
with them. We are continuing to use WhatsApp to
stay in touch with the leaders at the college, as well
as physicians at both the college and the local level,
who continue to send me WhatsApp messages with
photos of their cases to collaborate.
In what ways does this mission
demonstrate how podiatric care
aligns with local health-care practices
and preferences?
Because there really was no lower extremity-specific
care in Offa, we are only now just
getting started with educating people. It was very
exciting to see how interested local physicians
were in what podiatry is and how it can help
their communities. Patients were so grateful for
any help I could provide them. I'm quite certain
that as the years go on, our impact will become
greater and greater.
How would you summarize the
broader impact of the medical mission
on the local community, including
any training programs, educational
initiatives, or sustainable practices that
contribute to long-term improvements
in podiatric health?
As mentioned, I remain in touch with the college
and local physicians and endeavor to continue my
