Uniting for Change: The APMA
2024 Legislative Conference and
the Podiatric Advocacy Agenda
Washington, DC, witnessed a gathering of
more than 120 dedicated doctors of podiatric
medicine in March as they converged for the
APMA Legislative Conference. This annual event
serves as a platform for podiatrists to pound the
pavement, advocating for their profession and
lobbying Congress on crucial issues. This year, the
focus was on key legislative initiatives including
the Helping Ensure Life-and Limb-Saving Access
to Podiatric Physicians (HELLPP) Act, the Save
Medicare Act, the Resident Education and Deferred
Interest (REDI) Act, the Strengthening Medicare for
Patients and Providers Act, and the SUPPORT Act.
The HELLPP Act-One of the pivotal issues
at the forefront of the APMA 2024 Legislative
Conference was the HELLPP Act. This legislation
aims to rectify the long-standing problem
of Medicaid's failure to recognize podiatrists as
physicians. By addressing this oversight, the act
seeks to ensure that podiatrists can provide essential
medical services and contribute to comprehensive
patient care under Medicaid in every
state. Additionally, the act addresses concerns
within the Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Program
for people with diabetes, working toward a more
effective and accessible system.
The Save Medicare Act-Another crucial
legislative initiative on the agenda
was the Save Medicare Act, which seeks
to protect the integrity of the Medicare

brand. The act proposes to prohibit health plans
and insurers from using the name " Medicare "
in any Advantage plan, preventing potential
confusion and ensuring that beneficiaries can
make informed decisions about their health-care
coverage. This act reflects the commitment of
the podiatric community to safeguarding the interests
of patients and maintaining transparency
in health-care options.
The REDI Act-In light of the financial challenges
faced by medical and dental residents, including
those in podiatry, the REDI Act is a significant
proposal to address student loan burdens.
This act permits residents to defer interest on
their student loans during their residency training,
providing much-needed relief and facilitating
the pursuit of specialized medical education. By
