Reflecting on a Legacy:
Honoring Dr. Christina
and Looking Ahead
With the retirement of James R. Christina, DPM, APMA and the entire podiatric profession
are losing one of podiatry's finest leaders and advocates. Dr. Christina has been
immersed in the profession from the time he was a student at the Pennsylvania College
of Podiatric Medicine. He has touched all aspects of the profession-student; resident;
practitioner; member of the Maryland Podiatric Medical Association (ultimately serving
as president); APMA member serving on numerous committees including the Coding
Committee, JCRSB, and PPAC Board of Directors; member of the Maryland Board of
Podiatric Medical Examiners: chief of the Podiatry Subsection at Suburban Hospital in
Bethesda, MD; APMA director of Scientific Affairs; and, culminating his career, APMA
executive director and CEO. There isn't an aspect of the profession he couldn't relate to,
which made his insights and guidance on issues sound and well-developed. The APMA
Board of Trustees has had a steady guiding hand at the helm.
APMA has a very engaged Board of Trustees and staff who are meeting the challenges
facing the profession. The APMA Strategic Plan is more focused than previous iterations.
The membership can expect APMA to advocate more vigorously, educate more effectively,
research more innovatively, and engage members more directly. We continue to
strive daily to bring added value to members.
Change can be difficult and unsettling, but it is also a time for renewed energy and
perspective. I look forward to applying the leadership skills learned from Dr. Christina as
I serve as interim CEO. I embrace the opportunity to utilize my 20 years of experience at
APMA, my financial acumen as a CPA, and my association management skills as a CAE
to keep moving APMA in the right direction during the search for a new CEO.
