Meet the
Candidates
Each year during the APMA House of Delegates meeting, elections are held for open positions on the APMA Board of
Trustees, including officer positions. The following statements were written by the candidates. Elections will be held during
the House of Delegates meeting, March 15-18. Read on and get to know the candidates for your Board of Trustees!
Patrick DeHeer, DPM
Candidate for President-Elect
In my 10th year on the APMA
Board of Trustees, change took
center stage within the organization.
Organizational evolution
is vital, especially for a membership-based
entity. While change often carries
uncertainty and fear of the unknown, it also offers
opportunities to modernize and transform. Last
year, the board embraced such an opportunity by
initiating the search for a new CEO/executive director.
We began with assembling a well-prepared
search committee, which conducted a thorough,
structured process to identify a forward-thinking
leader for APMA and the profession.
Ultimately, the board selected Meghan
McClelland, MBA, as the new CEO/ED-the first
female to hold the position. This bold decision to
bring a business leader into the role represented
an important organizational shift. However, it was
a necessary step to position APMA for the evolving
health-care landscape and the future of podiatry.
Another significant advancement, championed
by APMA President Larry Santi, DPM, involved
strengthening relationships with our American
Medical Association (AMA) colleagues. In the fall

[of 2024], APMA and AMA leadership convened
in Chicago to discuss ways the two organizations
could collaborate to serve the public interest, their
memberships, and the health-care profession as a
whole. This inaugural meeting marked the beginning
of a promising partnership. Collaborating
with our allopathic and osteopathic colleagues to
enhance the health-care system is crucial for the
future of podiatry.
Serving as APMA treasurer this year was an
important milestone on my journey toward becoming
president-elect and, ultimately, the 100th
president of APMA in 2026. The Board of Trustees
enacted numerous initiatives to serve our members
and safeguard the profession's future. As an elected
representative, I approach these responsibilities
with seriousness and dedication. Throughout my
career, my guiding principle has been to " pay it
forward " and leave the profession better than I
found it.
The many diverse roles I serve in the profession
give me an unparalleled perspective on the
profession. As residency director at Ascension St.
Vincent Indianapolis, I mentor and educate the
next generation of podiatric surgeons. This role
