Real-Time Compliance
Global guidelines are firmly established to verify oxidation efficiency of TOC analyzers in regulated water systems. In the United
States, these guidelines are documented in the USP test chapter
<643> TOTAL ORGANIC CARBON. TOC analyzers must periodically meet a System Suitability Testing (SST) requirement. System
Suitability Testing challenges TOC instruments by verifying system responsiveness against two types of known organic chemicals.
USP <643> specifies these two compounds are sucrose and
1,4-benzoquionone. Due to their different chemical structure,
these compounds challenge the bond-breaking and oxidation capability of the TOC measurement technology. Systems which pass
SST are confirmed to have sufficient oxidation and are found
suitable for continued regulatory water monitoring. USP <643>
and EP 2.2.44 require that the SST test be performed periodically
on a calibrated instrument. All METTLER TOLEDO Thornton TOC
sensors are engineered to meet these requirements and have procedures for conducting SST.
