Secondly, the very fact that Bethlehem remained a small village until the twentieth century obviated any boom in real estate. Finally, the traditional conservatism of the Moravians has instilled in them a consciousness of their herit- age and a pride in whatever their forebears had accomplished. Today every effort is made to preserve these buildings and to have them appear "as they had been" in as far as it is possible.
