Cajamarquilla, Rimac Valley. Central Coast of Peru. Only a few miles up the valley from the city of Lima are the ruins of the great city of Cajamarquilla(above), an immensearea crowdedwith ruins of buildings and streets. Here the walls (right) were made of great blocksof mud, not of bricks, and probably molded in place. Almost no excavationhas been done here, and plans of the site are very sketchy. The good state of preservation indicates a relatively recent period, probably about A.D.1200. (Opposite) Paramonga. Central Coast of Peru. The great adobe ruin of «Paramongais presumed to be a fortress, possiblyat the frontier of the Chimu and Cuismancu "Empires." The removal of debris reveals its majestic proportions. It is probably of relatively late date, A.D.1000-1200. Winter 1952 223
