Tombs Princely Illyrian In Western Serbia By MILENA DJUKNI Systematic archaeological exploration in western Serbia- which has a great number of moundshas yielded some extremely important results during recent years. Among these the discovery of the princely tombs at Atenica is undoubtedly the most significant. This is because of the monumental size of the burial mounds, the elaborate tombs which they contain and their ritual significance. Among the many and varied grave offerings are valuable Archaic Greek and Scythian imports. The burial area consists of two adjoining mounds, and BORISLAV JOVANOVI oriented east and west, situated near the village of Atenica in the vicinity of acak, a town about sixtyfive miles south of Belgrade. The mounds have been badly damaged by plowing and other agricultural work; this destroyed the rounded profile which is characteristic of better preserved mounds. The Atenica mounds were once of unusual size and dominated the plain along the right bank of the Western Morava River. Mound 1 had the shape of a leveled-off low cone. It was some thirty-five meters in diameter, with a 1. View of the central grave of Mound 1, the smaller of the two burial mounds at Atenica. 43
