more background information and
promises to give much greater detail than was possible in the Handbook of South American Indians,
published by the Smithsonian Institution, that appeared in the late
1940's.

Several papers on archaeological
investigations in east central Arizona have been assembled in this
volume. All of the studies result
from the Chicago Natural History
Museum's Southwestern expedition
under the general direction of Paul
S. Martin, who contributesthe preface and summary. Most of the papers utilize field data from Carter
Ranch Pueblo near Vernon, Arizona. Descriptions of this site's architecture, burials and artifacts of
stone, bone, shell and baked clay
constitute three lengthy chapters by
Rinaldo.
Ceramic fragments from Carter
Ranch receive attention in three
shorter chapters: a tabulation of
sherd frequencies by pottery type
plus a stylistic descriptionof Snowflake Black-on-White by Longacre;
a statistical analysis of the ceramic
contents of different rooms by Freeman and Brown; and Longacre's
sociologicalinferencesderived from
plotted distribution frequencies of
painted design "elements."
Hevly discusseshis palynological
work in the Laguna Salada, about
twenty-five miles east of Carter
Ranch Pueblo. Cooley and Hevly
recount the geological history of
this same ephemeral lake. Lastly,
Longacreoutlines the archaeological
history of the Upper Little Colorado district as it has so far been
elucidatedthrough surveys and continuing excavationsby the Chicago
Natural History Museum. Charred
plant remains from the Carter
Ranch site and insights into formal relationships of design figures
on Snowflake Black-on-White are
treated in appendicesby Cutler and
Seaberg respectively.Specificdocumentation for all these papers appears on microcards as Archives of
Archaeology No. 24 (Society for
