children: a subject rare in vase
painting but fairly popular in other
media, especially sculptured pediments, of which there were at least
four. An interesting new hypothetical restoration for the center of a
Niobid pediment is offered.

The interesting and little known
period of contact between indigenous Navajo and refugee Pueblo Indians in northwestern New Mexico from about A.D.1700 to 1775
is documented in this book. Examination of the architecture and material culture in ten sites indicated
that this area was at the extreme
northern edge of the area of Pueblo
refugee contact. Influence is seen
more in the diffusion of items of
material culture rather than in permanent Pueblo occupationsites. The
resulting mixture is seen as being
ancestral to later Navajo rather
than Pueblo culture.

it claims to be. R. J. Hopper has
done a thorough job of modernizing
Stobart's popular work; in fact, he
has done so much that one would
think he could as easilyhave written
an entirely new book. But there is
an attractive quality to the prose of
1911 which might be difficult to
duplicate today, and sinceMr. Hopper has achievedsuch an expert revision, we may well be satisfied
with the results. In a long introduction and seven chapters the whole
of Greek civilizationis discussedin
an extremely readable and (thanks
to Mr. Hopper) reliable fashion.
The illustrations are for the most
part excellent, and the extensive
"notes to the plates" contain much
useful information. The bibliography (in which there are a few odd
typographical errors) is composed
almost entirely of recent works;
more of the old standbys might
have been mentioned,but the reader
will find these if he goes deeper
into the subject.

occupied pit-houses with associated
surface storage rooms dating between A.D.800 and 975. They were
by far the most commontype of site

belong to family groups. The excavated portions of the fourth site
were several masonry living rooms
dating just after A.D. 1000. The
detailed report is richly illustrated.
