The restored words "spoils and standards" are the same that Augustus used in his Res Gestae (The Deeds of Augustus) when he described the recapture of the standards from the Parthians in 20 b.c. Certain peculiarities of the horizontal surface of the marble ring indicate that some such symbol of Augustan charisma had been placed here.
