Group of the ship and Odysseus from the Cave of Tiberius at Sperlonga restored from hundreds of fragments of marble. The group is at present set up in the museum horizontally . SPERLONGA The Ship By JOHANNES of Odysseus FELBERMEYER The author questions how the Ship of Odysseus was originally set in the sculptural group at Sperlonga. P 1 rom hundreds of fragments of marble Professor G. Jacobi and the restorers of the Italian Department of Antiquities have carefully recreated the bow of a ship with a man desperately clinging to it. This magnificent sculptural group was found in the so-called Gave of Tiberius at Sperlonga, on the Tyrrhenian coast between Rome and Naples. An account of the original discovery of the sculpture and the establishment of the mu- seum as well as the restoration of the Polyphemus group can be found in Archaeology 22 (1969) 204-207. The great cave itself consists of an entrance with a large rectangular pool and island, a round pool and island, and two grottos. The cave contained several splendid and grandiose groups of sculpture that compose a new and unexpected chapter in the history of ancient art. 137
