A Breastplate from Olympia
The illegal export of artifacts usually
results in the irretrievable loss of the
objects from the countries of their
origin, a situation which has led the
AIA to pass the resolution quoted on
page 165 and unesco to seek ways
to prevent such activity. Marion Hancock Scott, who now lives in Kyrenia,
Cyprus, informed us of the unusual
odysseyof one such artifact.
At Olympia, in the 1870*8Edward
Barff of Zante, Mrs. Scott's greatuncle, bought for 5£ a bronze breastplate from a peasant who had found
it in the AlpheiosRiver. Later it came
into possessionof Mrs. Scott's grandfather Alfred Crowe and remained in
the Crowe familyin Greeceuntil 1941.
When the piece's great archaeological importance and value became
known, foreign museumsand collectors
offered Mr. Crowe large sums of
money for it. He always refused these
as it was illegal to export antiquities
and he felt it should remain in Greece.
Becauseof the Germaninvasion,in 1941
the Crowefamily,then livingin Patras,
had to leave the country on short
notice and were unable to make proper
arrangements for the safe keeping of
the cuirass. It was hidden in the attic
of their house, which was subsequently
occupied by German and Italian
soldiers and used as a hospital for
Italians. When the family returned in
1946, the cuirass had disappeared.Its
loss was recorded by the British Committee which compiled a list of works
of art destroyedor lost in Greece during the war. Nothing was heard of the
breastplate until December 1969,when
it was presented for public auction in
Basel (H. Cahn, Kunstwerke der Antike, Auktion 40 Basel, December 13,
1969, no. 140). Prior to the auctiorr,
the Greek Government bought the
piece and thereafter placed it on display in the Athens National Museum.
