value to the beginner but is uneven in
quality. The sectionon camps and forts
is excellent, but the chapter on towns
and their buildingssuffersby its brevity.
That on villas attempts a divisioninto
the cottage house, which apart from
Iwerne does not exist, and other types.
These are classifiedunder the winged
corridorand the courtyard,regardlessof
the fact that most of the former when
more fully investigatedturn out to be a
part of a larger complex,i.e. one of the
latter type. The aisled house cannot
stand on its own as a type since it is
almost always a barn-like building in
the villa outbuildings.There is little attempt made to see the villa as an economic unit with buildingsof specialized
functions.The chapterswhich followon
religious structures, tombs and native
settlementsare also too brief, while that
on inscriptionsremains an excellentintroduction. The chapter on coins however may be meaningfulto the numismatist but to the excavator wishing to
identify the coins he is finding it is of

That on coarse ware, although a great
improvement on Collingwood,is still
inadequateand the attempt to treat the
subject by form instead of fabrics is
most regrettable.So also is the implication throughout that all coarse pottery
began in Britain in the Flavian period,
taken from northern studies where in
fact this is true. There is unaccountably
no mention of pottery worksand their
kilns. The chapter on small finds has
been enlarged but still only a tiny fraction of these very varied objectsis represented.The platesare a great improvement, the original three are now
expandedto twenty-one,bringingin the
new technique of aerial photography.
Althoughone cannot deny that this new
edition contains much material which
the beginnerwouldnot find in any other
form, the questionremainsas to whether
it has not long outlivedits value to the
archaeologist.Archaeologicaltechniques
have developed fast in the last few
decadesbut one can studythis bookand
hardly be aware of these processes;the
emphasis is on the finds and not the
structures and the complications of
stratigraphy.In the 1930'sthis bookwas
a tour de force but now, patched and
mended, it servesonly to remind us of
an age which has passed. The archaeologistof today needsfar more than this
book can provide and he will still have
to search through the vast growing
library of research and excavationreports for structural details and parallels
to his small finds and pottery.
