At the right in the illustration is part of the heavy stone door at the entrance of the tomb. used, a fact which would indicate that the family must have died out abruptly in the fourth generation. The military gear depicted in the lunettes on the end walls suggests that the family earned military distinction in the turbulent years of Macedonian domination; at the present time there is no other evidence of the family in Macedonian history. Ahe burial chamber of this illustrious family is approached by a narrow corridor whose walls are painted a creamy white which sets off large objects painted in brighter colors. On the east wall against the creamy background a large perirhanterion or ceremonial basin is depicted filled with water. Painted on the opposite wall of the corridor is an altar with a snake. The altar 253
