Abandonedwattleand daub housein the vicinityofJerinin grad in northeasternSerbia.Built sometimeafter World War /, the house has a thatchedroof a westernliving roomwith a windowand ceiling (right) and an eastern open-roofedchamber.The houseis similar to the wattleand daub housesbuilt throughoutEurope during later prehistorictimes. Plan of the houseand its contentsbeforeintentionalburning. The housewas equippedwith simulatedprehistoricmaterials:a reed bd, cookedand uncooked animal bones, grain and fired potterysherds,and flint from a nearbyprehistoric site. Analysisof thesematerialsafter the burning testedthe effectsof an accidentalfire and pointed to the archaeologicallyretrievableartifacts from an actual prehistoricdwelling. Fragment of bakeddaub excavatedat the Late BronzeAge site ofJerinin grad in northeasternSerbia. The claypacking presumablywas used as insulationon the wattleor interlacedtwigskeletonof a prehistorichouse.Burning of the wattle frameworkwouldhave bakedthe daub.
