The 81st annual meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America celebratedthe AlA's100thanniversarywitha
varietyof specialprograms,sessions and
exhibits.A recordnumberof papers were
presentedat the meetingheld in Boston,
Massachusettsduring December27-30,
1979.Morethan 1,800peopleattendedthe
conference, sponsored jointly with the
AmericanPhilological
Association.
The annualAwardfor Distinguished
ArchaeologicalAchievementwas presented
to Egyptologist
DowsDunhambyRobertH.
Dyson,Jr., president(see page 5). A specialCentennialAwardwas givento Willard
Frank Libby,the scientistwho developed
the radiocarbondatingmethod.Frederick
R. Matson,honorarypresidentof the AIA,
awardedthe citationto Libby,whohad receivedthe 1960NobelPrizeforChemistry
in recognitionof his pioneeringwork.
