AmericanIndian ArchaeologicalInstitute,
Washington, CT: "Art of the Northwest
Coast: Symbolic Structures and Formal
Patterns" (through June 1982), exhibits
early to late 19th-century objects from
Washington's northwest coast, including
baskets, a canoe paddle, a fishhook, and a
boat prow.
The Asia Society, New York: "Oriental
Rugs of the Hajji Babas" (through June
20, 1982), displays 50 of the choicest
Oriental rugs to be found in the United
States, most made in the 19th or early
20th century, including examples from
Turkey,the Caucasus, Turkestan, Afghanistan, Iran, India, and China. Catalogue
available.
Buffalo Museum of Science,Buffalo, NY:
"Masterpiecesof the AnthropologyCollection" (through June 1982),displays artifacts from all over the world featuring a
17th-centurybrass coffer from Nigeria, a
pair of Maori jade stabbing clubs from
New Zealand and a wooden cup from a
prehistoric Peruvian grave. Catalogue
available.
China Trade Museum, Milton, MA:
"Yang-ts'ai: The Foreign Colors, Rose
Porcelainsof the Ch'ingDynasty" (through
Jíme 27, 1982), displays more than 100
richly decorated rose palette porcelains,
including a tiny egg cup painted in the
Meissen tradition with European flowers,
a pair of "soldier" vases and a naturalistic
lotus-shaped teapot. Catalogue available.

decorated with stylized peony blossoms
and handle and spout sculpted as
Buddhist lions, in "Yang-ts'ai: The Foreign
Colors,Rose Porcelains of the Ch'ing
Dynasty," at the China TradeMuseum.

The Cloisters, New York: "Radiance
and Reflection: Medieval Art from the
Raymond Pitcairn Collection" (through
September 15, 1982), displays over 100
masterpieces of Mediaeval French, Spanish, Italian, and English stained glass and

sculpture, never before exhibited to the
public.
Explorers' Hall, National Geographic
Society, Washington, DC: "Ice Age Art"
(June 1-October 31, 1982), presents engravings, photomuralsof cave paintings in
Lascaux and Altamira, and figurines and
jewelryfrom prehistoric sites in Europe, to
illustrate the environment of Upper Palaeolithic Europe (35,000 to 10,000 B.c.).

Indian Museum, Southold, NY: "Long
Island AboriginalArtifacts" (permanent),
exhibits Algonquin ceramics, early soapstone bowls,projectilepoints, and a display
of native vegetables, foods, herbs, and
domestic objects.
The Jewish Museum, New York: "The
Mamluk Revival" (through July 1982),
displays late 19th to early 20th-century
Mamluk revival objects featuring inlaid
metalwork from Cairo, Jerusalem and
Damascus. "The Book and its Cover:
Manuscripts and Bindings of the 12th
through 18th Centuries" (through Winter
1982), includes 15 rare bindings and 24
Hebrew manuscripts from the museum's
collection.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New
York: "Along the Ancient Silk Routes:
Central Asian Art from the West Berlin
Museums" (through June 20, 1982),exhibits over 150 paintings and sculptures
from major archaeologicalsites in eastern
Central Asia (Chinese Turkestan) dating
from the 8th and 9th centuries, including
large fresco paintings from the walls of
Buddhist temples and monasteries, and
stucco and terracotta sculpture. Catalogue
available. "The Michael C. Rockefeller
Wing" (permanent), exhibits over 1,500
examples of the art of Africa, the Pacific
Islands, and Precolumbian and Native
America, including sculpture of wood,
stone, terracotta, precious and semiprecious stone, treasures of gold and silver,
and textiles, spanning 3,000years.
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA: "New
England Begins: The 17th Century" (May
5-August 22, 1982), displays more than
600objects illustrating the art and culture
of seventeenth-century New England,
including silver, gravestone carvings,
furniture, glass, ceramics, textiles, arms,
and tools. Catalogue available. "Hawai'i:
The Royal Isles" (June 3-August 8, 1982),
a major exhibitionof morethan 300objects,
including paintings, ceremonial and utilitarian objects, woodenand stone images,
and the cloak of Kamehameha the Great,
unifier of the Islands, traces the native
tradition and the influenceof western ideas
after Captain Cook's discovery of Hawai'i
