LIECHTENSTEIN
Gutenberg Castle, Balzers (Spring and
Summer 1983). On a hill crowned by the
MediaevalGutenberg castle are two sites,
including a Mediaeval cemetery in use
about 800-1200. The hillshowsoccupation
from Neolithic through Mediaeval times;
about 200 meters awayis a third site on the

Citania de San Juliao (All year; excavations September-October 1983). Three
lines of battlementsand circularhouses of
the Iron Age mark this large site,whichwas

Strichen Stone Circle (Allyear). This dramaticmonument is a reconstructedRecumbent Stone Circle,probablyconnected with
the alignment of the moon as seen by the
farmingpeoplewhobuiltthese circlesaround
2000-1600b.c.Other sitesin the area include
Louden Wood, Berrybrae,Netherton, and
other stone circles,as wellas a BronzeAge
promontory fort at Cullycan,near Pennan.
Hie ForviesSands nature reserveis25 miles
awayat Newburgh,and there is an excellent
beach at Fraserburghon the dramaticnorth
coast. Gettino there: The site is on the crest
of a hilloff the road from Strichen to New
Deer; from Strichen, turn right after half a
milejust beforetwocottageson the left;after
passing farm buildings,turn right on first
trackleadingto cottage(ifdriving,park here);
take path on right of cottage to hilltop,
through stile and past old dovecote. No

SPAIN
Ferrandell-Oleza, Mallorca (June 1-September 30, 1983). The site was occupied
from the ChalcolithicAge (2000-1400b.c.)
throughthe Romanperiod,but isparticularly
important as one of the few Chalcolithic
settlements in Europe, yielding a great
quantity of Bell Beaker wares. Wallsof the
"Old Settlement" forming a 3,600-squaremeter compound are visible,as are megalithicstructuresof the "YoungerSettlement"
and buildingsof the Bronze and Iron Ages.
The Deya ArchaeologicalMuseumand Research Centre is located 12 kilometersfrom

Pollentia, Mallorca (Allyear; excavations
July 15-August 30, 1983). Pollentia is a
Romancityfoundedin 123 b.c.and occupied
through the 4th centurya.D.Severalhouses
have been partiallyrestored, and a colonnaded street, city wall, forum, and several
shops are also visible. Material from the
excavationis in the Museo de Mallorcain
Palma.An excellentbeach is nearby,and the
necropolisof Son Real is near the town of
Can Picafort.Megalithicremainsabound on
the island,and there are thousands of preRoman sites on Mallorcaand neighboring
Menorca and Ibiza.Getting there:Pollentia
is in the outskirtsof Alcudia;inquire at the

Aby,Västerhaninge (May5-November 15,
1983). Unusualgrave constructionsunique
in Sweden are being excavatedat this large
gravefield of the pre-Roman Iron Age.
Jordbro, one of tne largest prehistoric
gravefields in Sweden, is nearby. Getting
there: Västerhaningeis 30 kilometersfrom
Stockholmand can be reached by train.No

Björka, Hälsingtuna, Hudiksvaili (June

occupied a.D.500-1000 has been partially

of Hög and Hälsingtuna, a museum in
Hudiksvalland an excavatedsite in Trogsta

kilometers outside Hudiksvall,about 220

Eketorp, Öland (May 1-August 31, 1983).
Excavationscarried out since 1964 have
providedinformationfor the reconstruction
of this site.The originalring fort at Eketorp
was built around a.D.300-400; it was later
enlarged and became a permanent settlement until it was abandoned in the 7th or
8th century.The fort area was reoccupied
between a.D. 1000-1300. The ring wall
around the site and buildings have been
rebuilt to convey a picture of Mediaeval
peasant life.The island of Öland is a major
touristarea in summer;there are 19 fortson
the island,most builtbetweena.D.300-600.
