This site has given its name to the Poverty
Point culture (1800-500 B.C.),knownfor its
extensive trade network and distinctive
artifacts,includinglapidaryitems,microflints

shapes).This ceremonialand tradingcenter
features sixconcentricearthen ridgesthreequarters of a mile in diameter, 1 conical
mound and 2 large bird effigy mounds.

Grand Village of the Natchez, Natchez,

as the Fatherland Site, the Grand Villageis
the location of the historic ceremonial
mound center of the Natchez Indians. It
features3 restored ceremonialmounds and

Emerald Mound, located on the Natchez
Trace, is approximately12 miles north of

BluffFurnace, Chattanooga, TN (May 3June 20, 1983; other times by appointment). This historicblast furnace, partially
excavatedin 1981,representsChattanooga's
first heavy industry. Originallya charcoal
furnace,in 1859itbecamethe firstfurnacein
the region to use coke as a fuel.Parts of the
charging deck, furnace hearth and casting
sheds have been exposed.The Hunter and
Houston museums are adjacent to the site.
Gettingthere:BluffFurnace is in downtown
Chattanooga. Take Market Street to 3rd
Street, turn south, proceed to High Street
and turn north (follow signs to Hunter
Museum),and park at the museum.The site
is down the hillfrom the museum, next to
the Walnut Street Bridge. Appointment
