NEW MEXICO
Atsinna Ruins, El MonroNational Monument, NM(Allyear; winter,8 a.m.-5 p.m.;

200-foot-hiahsandstone bluffare the ruins
of Zuni Indian pueblos occupied ca. AD.
1200-1400and discoveredbythe Spaniards
in the sixteenthcentury.One large ruin with
16 rooms and 2 kivas has been partially
excavatedand stabilized.The rockitselfbears
hundreds of Zuni petroglyphs as well as
inscriptions carved by Spanish and later

Aztec Ruins National Monument, Aztec,

Chaco Anasaziconstructed this sandstone
masonry pueblo, 3 stories high with 500
rooms,aboutA.D.1100.Itwasabandoned by
1200and then reoccupiedbythe MesaVerde
Anasazi;finalabandonment came by 1300.
Visitorscan also see a reconstructed Great
Kiva.On-site museum. The Salmon Ruins

Three Rivers Petroglyphs, Tularosa, NM
(All year). The site contains the largest
collection of Jornada Mogollon period
petroglyphs,includinggeometric,anthropomorphicand zoomorphicfigures,in an easily
accessibleconcentratedarea. A largeprehis-

toricvillageisassociatedwiththe petroglyphs.
The Space Museum in Alamogordo and
Valleyof the Fires State Park at Carrizozo
are nearby. Getting there: The petroglyph
site is on Highway 54, 17 miles north of
Tularosaand 28 miles south of Carrizozo;

10, 1983). Occupied A.D.1000-1300, the
site is a group
of surface slab-linedrooms
and pitrooms located on the open plains
near the mountain passagewayleading to
the Rio Grande Valley. Pecos National
Monumentand Fort Union NationalMonument are in the vicinity. Getting there:

Vidal Site, Gallup, New Mexico (July
4-29, 1983; Monday-Friday, mornings
only). The principalfeature of this Anasazi
and Pueblo II-III site is a Great Kiva, the
communityceremonial chamber,about 15
meters in diameter which should yield
informationabout the site'sreligiousfunction;
50-60 small dwellingsites associated with
the kiva lie along Heaton Canyon. Within
60-75 miles are Chaco Culture National
HistoricalPark, El MonroNational Monument, Zuni Pueblo, Navajo Indian Reservation, and a museum at Red Rock State

SOUTH DAKOTA
Mammoth Site, Hot Springs, SD (May
28-September 5, 1983, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.;
September 6-18, 1983, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.;
Sundays 1-5 p.m.; excavations July 8
-August 6, 1983).About20,000 years ago,
as many as 100 mammoth were trapped in
this steep-sided karst sinkhole, tne only
concentration of mammoth bones in the
western hemisphere. A total of 700 bones
have been excavated so far, including 59
tusks and 21 skulls. Visitors can watch
curatorsclean and treat the bones and tusks
for preservation. A temporary building
shelters the bones in situ year around. The
