Late Medieval Secular Art" (permanent),
displays 250 objects from 14th and 15thcentury Europe, including equestrian and
hunting equipment, door knockers, hinges
and locks, lustreware plates, ivory boxes
and mirror frames, leather goods, jewelry,
and tapestries. "Egyptian Reinstallation:
Phase III" (permanent), is the final phase
of the complete reinstallation of the museum's Egyptian collection,displayingmaterial from the 12th to mid-18thdynasties.
Museum of Our National Heritage, Lexington, MA: "Utopias in the Promised
Land : The CommunalSocietiesof Ephrata
and Economy, Pennsylvania" (through
December31,1983),comparesthe histories
and lifestylesof two German communities,
each established as a self-sufficient religious commune. The exhibit includes
clothing, domestic objects and German
calligraphy.
Museum of the City of New York, New
York: "British New York: 1664-1783"
(through November27, 1983),celebrating
the 200th anniversary of the end of the
RevolutionaryWar,displays portraits and
artifacts associated with the British period
in NewYorkCity.Includedare two portraits
of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart
and a portrait of King George III by
Benjamin West, as well as a piece of the
statue of George III torn down by a
revolutionary mob on July 9, 1776.
The Newark Museum, Newark, NJ: "Tibetan ReligiousArt" (permanent),features
21 examples of sculpture, painting and
ritual objects dating from the 10th to the
20th centuries, illustrating Tibetan skill in
fashioning cast metal images and brilliantly coloredpaintings on cloth. Also on
display are examplesof Buddhist sculpture
and painting from the surrounding regions
of Kashmir, Nepal and China. "Tempered
by Time: 800 Years of Southwest Indian
Pottery" (through January 20, 1984),
provides a unique view of late 19th and
early 20th century American Indian pottery from pueblos in Arizona and New
Mexico. Featured is the art of the Hopi,
Zuni, Acoma, and Santa Clara, augmented
with prehistoric pottery from Mesa Verde,
Chaco Canyon and Casas Grandes. Catalogue available.
The University Museum, University of
Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA: "The
Lenape: Wanderers in Their Own Land"
(through Fall 1983),tells the story of the
DelawareValley'soriginalinhabitants with
60 Indian artifacts and photographs. The
highlight of the exhibit is a newlyacquired,
exquisitely decorated Delaware Indian
shirt. "Ancient Mesopotamia: The Royal
Tbmbs of Ur" (permanent), is a reinstallation of one of the museum's most famous
and popular galleries. The fabulous collection from the Royal Cemetery at Ur includes a gold and lapis bull-headed lyre

and QueenPu'abi's headdress and jewelry,
dating from 2650-2250B.c. (See page 62.)
The Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore, MD:
"Focus on Art: Technical Studies Sponsored by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation" (through July 15,1983),demonstrates
the various waysscientificexaminationcan
aid in the study and investigation of art.
The exhibitionfocuseson fiveconservation
projects, including a study of the history
of papyrus manufacture in ancient and
modern Egypt to explore the process of
deterioration; a study of three Russian
icons by x-radiography and microscopyto
help date and authenticate the works; and
an examination of a Chinese bronze wine
beaker using x-radiographic, microscopic
and metalographic techniques, which revealed that the vessel was in fact a collage
of fragments from several vessels. "The
Codex Hammer" (through August 28,
1983),is the only east coast exhibition of
an important manuscript by Leonardo da
Vinci. Titled "Of the Nature, Weight and
Movement of Water," the manuscript's 36
folios were written in Leonardo's famous
right-to-leftmirror writing. Also on display
is a page of figure studies thought to have
been drawn by Leonardo at the same time
as the Codex, between 1506and 1510.
YaleUniversity Art Gallery, New Haven,
CT: "Life in an Eastern Province: The
Roman Fortress at Dura-Europos"
(through August 1983),is a collection of
artifacts from the Yale/Frenchexpedition
to Dura-Europos, Syria, including coins,
arms and armor, wall paintings, glass,
parchment, and papyrus. "The Communion of Scholars: Chinese Art at Yale"
(through December 1983), features
bronzes, jades, ceramics, sculpture, and
paintings from the university's collections.

MIDWEST

The Adler Planetarium, Chicago,IL: "Star
Gods of the Ancient Americas" (through
September 21, 1983), is the first major
exhibition devoted to the fascination of
Indians of the Americas with the heavens.
The 140 artifacts on display, of gold,
turquoise, stone, and ceramic, represent
the major Indian cultures and illustrate
their sophisticated knowledge of astronomy. (See Archaeology, November/December 1982.)
The Art Institute of Chicago,Chicago,IL:
"The VaticanCollections:The Papacy and
Art" (July 23-October 16, 1983), is a
magnificent collectionof objects from the
Vatican Museums, Vatican Library, St.
Peter's Basilica,and the Papal Apartments.
The 237 works on display, ranging from
Egyptian to modern, reflect the long
history of papal involvementwith the arts.
