with prehistoric pottery from Mesa Verde,

Patchogue-MedfordPublic Library, Long
Island, NY: "Glimpses of Algonkian Culture: Indians of Southern NewYorkState"
(October 4-28, 1983), provides a brief
introduction to the Metoac, the Delaware
and the Mahican, focusing on aspects of
the lives of these peoples during the 17th,
18th and 19th centuries and the results of
contact with Europeans and other Indian
groups.
Peabody Museum of Salem, Salem, MA:
"Kanban: Shop Signs of Japan" (through
October 30, 1983),traces the evolution of
kanban, or signboards, in Japan from the
17th through early 20th centuries. The
gifted artisans who created the kanban
incorporated many traditional artscalligraphy, lacquer painting, wood carving, and finecarpentry-into bold and ingenious designs to advertise such businesses
as tea housesand greengrocers,pharmacies
and opticians, sword and armor makers,
and kimonorental services.Also exhibited
are 18thand 19th-centurywoodblockprints
depicting the placement of kanban on the

The Textile Museum, Washington, DC:
"Aymara Weavings: Ceremonial Tbxtiles
of Colonial and 19th-century Bolivia"
(September 1-October 16, 1983), is an
exhibitionof early weavingsby the Aymara
Indians of Bolivia. Among the approximately 60 weavingsincluded are ponchos,
tunics, skirts, mantles, coca bags, coca
cloths, and belts. Circulated by Sites.
The University Museum, University of
Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA: "The
Lenape: Wanderers in Their Own Land"
(through September 18, 1983), tells the
story of the Delaware Valley's original
inhabitants with 60 Indian artifacts and
photographs. The highlight of the exhibit
is a newly acquired, exquisitely decorated
DelawareIndian shirt. "Eskimos"(October
13, 1983-October1984),a display of ethnographicmaterials from the Arctic, draws
distinctions between Eskimo culture of
northwestern and southwestern Alaska
through comparisons of hunting and fishing, settlement life and ceremonial customs. "Ancient Mesopotamia: The Royal
Tbmbsof Ur" (permanent), is a reinstallation of one of the museum's most famous
and popular galleries. The fabulous collection from the Royal Cemetery at Ur includes a gold and lapis bull-headed lyre
and Queen Pu'abi's headdress and jewelry,

The Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore, MD:
"Designedfor Use: AncientIbols" (through
September 11, 1983), is an exhibition of
bronze tools from ancient Greece and

Rome,each designedfor a specificfunction
but with an eye for beauty. Included are
medical instruments, lamps, eating utensils, and a strigil- an athlete's tool used to
scrapeoff oil and dirt after exercise."Ivory:
The Sumptuous Art" (October 15, 1983January 15, 1984), a major exhibition of
ivory as a material for art, contains over
500worksranging from predynastic Egyptian objects of about 8000 b.c. to early
20th-century Art Nouveau.
YaleUniversity Art Gallery, New Haven,
CT: "The Communionof Scholars: Chinese
Art at Yale" (through December 1983),
features bronzes, jades, ceramics, sculpture, and paintings from the university's
collections.
MIDWEST
The Adler Planetarium, Chicago,IL: "Star
Gods of the Ancient Americas" (through
September 21, 1983), is the first major
exhibition devoted to the fascination of
Indians of the Americas with the heavens.
The 140 artifacts on display, of gold,
turquoise, stone, and ceramic, represent
the major Indian cultures and illustrate
their sophisticated knowledge of astronomy. (See Archaeology, November/December 1982.)
The Art Institute of Chicago,Chicago,IL:
"The Vatican Collections:The Papacy and
Art" (through October 16, 1983), is a
magnificent collectionof objects from the
Vatican Museums, Vatican Library, St.
Peter's Basilica,and the Papal Apartments.
The 237 works on display, ranging from
Egyptian to modern, reflect the long
history of papal involvementwith the arts.

(through October 16, 1983), designed to
supplement the Vatican exhibition, features prints and drawings from the museum'spermanent collectionand rare books
from the Ryerson Library. "Highlights of
Arms , and Armor from the George F.
Harding Collection"(through October 31,
1983), features outstanding examples of
entire and partial suits of armor,equestrian
equipment, swords and daggers, polearms,
firearms, and accessories.The majority of
the 200 pieces, ranging in date from the
15th through 19th centuries, are of European origin, but the exhibit also includes
examples from the Middle East and the
United States.
Cincinnati Museum of Natural History,
Cincinnati, OH: "Black Island Paradise:
Lifein Melanesia"(through Summer 1984),
is a rare collection of artifacts from the
Melanesian islands gathered between 50
and 100 years ago. The artifacts are included in displays exploring the social and
environmental worlds of Melanesia before
the final impact of westernization.
The ClevelandMuseum of Art, Cleveland,
OH: "Consuming Passions: The Art of
Foodand Drink" (through October9, 1983),
examines artists' interpretations and renderings of food for decorative purposes,
utensils and tools used in the preparation
and consumption of food and drink, and
some of the symbolic, metaphorical and
ritual uses of food and food imagery
