(now submerged under a lake) were totally

Crickley Hill, Gloucestershire (All year,
daily, except Thursday; excavations
planned July and August 1985). This 7acre site,one of the largestprehistoricexcavationsin Europe, lies on a cliffedge of the
Cotswolds.Occupationconsistsof a fortified
Neolithicvillage,an Iron Age hillfortand a
late or post-Romanoccupation of the abandoned fortress. The prehistoric portion is
particularlyrich, yieldingover 750,000 objects in 16 years of excavation.MassiveIron
Age ramparts mark the site. On-site museum open 9:30 a.m.-5:30p.m.,dailyexcept
Thursday. The ancient cathedral city of
Gloucester and Regency Cheltenham are
nearby,and the prehistoric monuments of
SalisburyPlain are about 20 milesfrom the

Hamwic and Mediaeval Southampton
(Excavations tentatively scheduled for
1985). Hamwic is one of the most important MiddleSaxon sites to be excavated in
northwest Europe. Middle Saxon (ca. A.D.
700-850) artifacts recovered include pottery,coins,animal bone, glass,iron, bronze,
whetstones,and quernstones.The Mediaeval town of Southampton was a flourishing
port (12th-16th centuriesA.D.)and home to
many rich merchants. 'An art gallery and

Jorvik Viking Centre, Coppergate, York

completed). Originally a Roman town,
Coppergatewas deserted in the Anglianera
and reoccupied early in the Viking Age.
Excavations between 1976 and 1982 revealed remarkably well-preserved timber
buildingsnow conserved and re-erected on
the originalsite.Visitorstravel back in time
to a life-size,fullyauthentic reconstruction
of VikingAge Coppergate. Small electric
time-carswitha recorded commentarycarry
visitorsback through time as it was on a typicalmarket day,late OctoberA.D.948. Many
of the best finds from the excavation are
displayed in Treasure Hall. YorkshireMuseum (archaeologicalcollection),National

Littlecote Roman Villa, Near Hungerford,
Berkshire (Easter-September 30, 1985,
10 a.m.-5 p.m.; excavations scheduled
for April-September 30, 1985). Littlecote
is a Roman villa of the 2nd-4th centuries.
Among the remains conserved are a large
house with baths, hypocausts, kitchen and
an exotic Orphic chapel- possiblythe first
chapel yet found from the Roman Empire
-with a restored Orpheus mosaic.Placesof

an early Tudor mansion with a fine English
CivilWar collection, AveburyBronze Age
temple, and Neolithictombs 10 miles west
